In 2018 KL Tower's new representative Avery Badenhop sent messages to Sibu BASE jumpers stating that KL Tower was banning Sibu BASE jumpers. After exposing the efforts to destroy Sibu BASE jump, instead of rectifying the problem and other negligence associated with their BASE jumping event, KL Tower managers chose to go on a campaign of denial and threatened legal action to try to cover it up.

Why Do Tower Strikes Continue To Happen Every Year Off The Massively Overhanging KL Tower?

It should have been very easy to prevent BASE jumpers from slamming into the massively overhanging KL Tower. But every year tower strikes continued to happen, often resulting in serious injury. It was due to failures on all levels. The complacency of BASE jumpers, the negligence of event contractors, and the strong denial of later KL Tower management that there were any issues. All parties were very naively or negligently keen to ensure tower strikes continued to happen.

The Harsh Consequences Of Eliminating Tower Strikes For The Annual KL Tower Event

The greatest achievement at the KL Tower event was neutralising the negligence of new KL Tower managers and event contractors to finally eliminate Tower strikes from the event in 2017. However, there were high consequences to pay. It resulted in expulsion from the event with KL Tower managers and event contractors determined to do everything known to bring back a record number of tower strikes and other incidents. They also set Malaysian BASE jumping up for the next fatality.

Trying to educate BASE jumpers about making the extra effort to ensure that no tower strikes happen at the annual KL Tower BASE jumping event was always a challenging task. Despite education given to BASE jumpers about the serious problem of tower strikes and the frequency that they happen, BASE jumper’s core belief and feeling that it should be almost impossible to hit such a massively overhanging tower remained dominant.
