Climbing Mount Kinabalu

Australian BASE jumper Gary Cunningham arrived in Sabah a few days early to climb Mount Kinabalu. He started his climb On 5th August. The climb starts at Timpohon Gate at a height of 1866.4 meters. It was a about a 4.5 hour hike up the trail to the guest house at Laban Rata. Visitors to the mountain stay overnight in the guest house to acclimatise to the thin air. Laban Rata is at a height of 3272.2 meters. The next morning hikers wake up at 2am to complete the climb to the summit at Low's Peak which is a height of 4095.2 meters. After watching the beautiful sunrise and having a good look around, it is time for the long decent. Hikers stop in at Laban Rata for breakfast before descending the rest of the way down.

BASE Jumping at Menara Tun Mustapha

On the morning of 9th August jumpers were taken to Menara Tun Mustapha by parasail. Our parasailing boats were waiting for us across the road from our hotel. It was a nice morning to be out on the harbour with a spectacular view all around. We could see our jump building Menara Tun Mustapha with Mount Kota Kinabalu behind it.

Monsopiad Cultural Village

For our closing dinner we were taken to the Monsopiad head hunter tribe for dinner. Fortunately they don't hunt heads any more and we spent the night practice blow pipe skills and learning traditional dances with the tribal women.

Thanks to Sabah Tourism for all their help in organising the event.
